Gunderson calls amendment 'anti-gay'
Steve Gunderson, a former Republican congressman from Wisconsin,
said Friday in La Crosse the marriage amendment is on the state
ballot for "divisive and partisan reasons."
"I don't believe that you have to make those of us who happen
to be different lesser citizens in the eyes of God in order to uphold
the institution of marriage," said Gunderson, who is openly
gay.
Gunderson, an Osseo, Wis., native who served in the state Legislature
before representing western Wisconsin in Congress for 16 years,
said state law already is clear regarding marriage.
"I think if they were only trying to protect marriage, which
state law already does in Wisconsin, then they would have had a
constitutional amendment that said marriage is between a man and
a woman, but they would have been silent on the issue of domestic
partnerships, civil unions and other legal protections," Gunderson
said. "They clearly wanted to make this anti-gay." |
