North Cross' Gay takes VIS state title - A readin goes here and here and here four decks

WOODBERRY -- Jane Gay was in good health coming into the Virginia Independent Schools state cross country meet and the result was a state title.

The North Cross junior, who missed last year's meet with a stress fracture, was the only girl to finish the 5K course in less than 20 minutes in the Division II race (19:22.34) and won the individual title on Friday at Woodberry Forest School.

Roanoke Catholic, led by Mirenda Gwin's 10th-place finish, led the Celtics to a third-place finish in the 19-team competition. Potomac School won the team title.

The Roanoke Catholic boys, who won the state title two years ago, finished fifth and were led by top-10 finishes by Thomas McConnel (fourth) and Andrew Nordhaus (ninth). Both runners also ended up in the top 10 a year ago.

North Cross finished 18th overall and were led by Sheel Patel, who was 28th.

This was the first year the VIS had divided the girls' cross country in to two divisions.

Potomac school won the girls' Division II title with 57 points, five less than runner-up Peninsula Catholic. Roanoke Catholic had 118 points.

Miller School won the boys' Division II title with 93 points, topping Covenant School in a tiebreaker.
